What to Avoid When Planning Your Europe Backpacking Itinerary

Updated: Jan 18, 2021

A trip to Europe is one of the best things a person can have and if you are off to or intending to have one, congratulations!

The experience will surely change your life for the better and leave you with lasting memories that will make you smile for the rest of your life - but only if you have done your planning well. Europe is a whole another continent that features countries whose cultures may differ entirely from yours. And it has a reputation for being expensive. As such, getting down with the details of your trip is a must, as it will help you make the most out of it. Avoid these three common mistakes.

Overpacking your itinerary with destinations. Getting to go on a trip is an exciting opportunity for many of us, so we want to make sure that we harness it to its full potential. As a result, we end up overburdening our itineraries with too many destinations. Now, if you have a lot of time and a lot of money, that should be no problem. But if you only have two weeks and you’d like to keep things within your budget, it is best to limit the number of destinations that you want to hit up according to what you want most, with what money you have.

Obsessing over the perfect accommodation. Another common mistake that people end up making when planning their Europe backpacking itinerary for the first time is to obsess over the perfect accommodation. If you want to splurge, go right on ahead and be picky. But in many instances, you actually don’t need to look past page one of your search results. You probably won’t be spending a lot of time in your hostel or hotel anyway. As long as you can make sure that the place is safe, clean, and comfortable, you should be good to go. The rest of your trip awaits when you step out of your chosen accommodations.

Going overboard with pre-bookings. One of the best things that happened to travel is our ability to pre-book minor essentials such as museum tickets. In this way, we’re sure that we can have access to any of the activities we hope to do. When backpacking through Europe, remember that among the most significant hurdles is time. As such, it is best to pre-book only those things that you are sure you’ll be able to enjoy. There is no point to pre-booking ten activities for one day; you’ll probably not have enough time, and you’ll just be stressing yourself trying to make it to every one of them.

Finally, learn as much as you can about the cities or countries that you want to include in your itinerary. This will help inform your decisions as you plan your trip, and you can customize your trip towards your utmost happiness.
